Whether it's in your own backyard or far away, championing the cause for Historic Preservation is worth the effort and usually turns the tide!
Upon hearing of the pending destruction of the tomb of chapter namesake, Jacques Donatien LeRay de Chaumont, the LeRay de Chaumont Chapter, Watertown, NY, took on the cause for historic preservation on foreign soil. The message was from Philippe de Bausset who has ties to the LeRay family and stayed at the LeRay Mansion, now located on Fort Drum, when he visited and lectured a few years ago.
A letter from the chapter to the Mayor of Chaumont cited the chapter members' objections and what Monsieur LeRay did to aid our cause in the Revolution and beyond. He secretly sent contributions from his personal wealth, interceded on our behalf with the French Government, and gave Benjamin Franklin the use of his Chateau at Passy during Franklin's nine years of diplomatic service.
Based on the chapter letter and other efforts in France, the Chaumont Municipal Council understood his contributions to our country, and voted to restore and preserve LeRay's tomb as part of the commune's heritage completely integrating his importance in American-French relations.
